THE FATAL SHOOTING HAPPENED SATURDAY AFTER A DOMESTIC DISPUTE WHEN THE MAN APPARENTLY THREATENED HIS FATHER WITH THAT MACHETE. A PATROL CAR DASHBOARD CAMERA CAPTURED THE SECOND, LEADING TO THE FATAL CONFRONTATION BETWEEN THE MAN AND FOUR OFFICERS IN ALL IN THE PARKING LOT OF A BOYNTON BEACH PARK. INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER TERRI PARKER HAS MORE OF THAT VIDEO TONIGHT. SHE ALSO FOUND OUT THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THE SUSPECT WHO GOADED OFFICERS TO SHOOT HIM HAD CHALLENGED POLICE THE VERY SAME WAY. THAT SEVERAL BOYNTON BEACH POLICE OFFICERS FIRING THEIR WEAPONS AT 31 YEAR OLD EDINSON JULES AT INTERCOASTAL PARK SATURDAY. POLICE SAY THEY RESPONDED TO A REPORT OF A DISPUTE BETWEEN JULES AND HIS FATHER. THEY SAY THEY TRIED TO DE-ESCALATE THE SITUATION, REPEATEDLY TELLING JULES TO DROP THE MACHETE, BUT SAY HE IGNORED THE COMMANDS AND SAID, SHOOT, WHY DON’T YOU WANT TO SHOOT? YOU CAN SEE EDINSON THEN CHARGES TOWARD THE OFFICERS WHILE WAVING THE MACHETE, AND THAT’S WHEN THE SHOTS RING OUT. OFFICERS ON SCENE BEGAN LIFESAVING MEASURES AND EDINSON WAS RUSHED TO DELRAY MEDICAL CENTER, WHERE HE LATER DIED. ACCORDING TO COURT RECORDS, ANOTHER BOYNTON OFFICER PULLED JULES OVER IN DECEMBER FOR DRIVING WITH A COUNTERFEIT TAG. HE SAID JULES REFUSED TO COOPERATE, AND JULES IMMEDIATELY TOLD ME HE WAS NOT GETTING OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND TOLD ME TO SHOOT HIM, AND HE WANTED TO GO BACK TO HIS COUNTRY. FACED WITH A TASER, POLICE SAID JULES EVENTUALLY COOPERATED AND WAS CHARGED WITH A COUNTERFEIT TAG AND RESISTING AN OFFICER WITHOUT VIOLENCE. THAT WAS TERRI PARKER REPORTING. Officers say they attempted to de-escalate the situation, repeatedly telling Jules to drop the weapon.Instead, police say Jules refused and yelled: “Shoot — why don’t you want to shoot?” Moments later, he charged at officers while swinging the machete.Officers opened fire, and body cam footage captured the sound of multiple gunshots. Jules was rushed to Delray Medical Center, where he later died.Parker uncovered court records showing that just four months ago, during a December traffic stop for a counterfeit tag, Jules also challenged another officer to shoot him.“Jules immediately told me he was not getting out of the vehicle and told me to ‘shoot him!’ and he wanted to go back to his country,” the officer wrote in the incident report.That encounter ended without violence after Jules was threatened with a Taser and ultimately complied. He was charged with possessing a counterfeit tag and resisting an officer without violence.The four officers involved in Saturday’s shooting — Officer Sunil Surajbally, Officer Brittany Jones, Officer Amanda Eichorst, and Officer Thomas Winkles — were not injured and are currently on non-disciplinary leave pending the results of a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation.
